Tomar
Tomar, a former home of the Knights Templar, is a charming city known for its aesthetic and cultural heritage, which is best exemplified by the Convent of Christ, a key piece of Portuguese Renaissance art.
Alcobaça
Alcobaça owes its notoriety and improvement to the Religious community or Regal Monastery of St Nick Maria, established by the Request for Cistercians in 1153. Building started in 1178 ashore given by Dom Afonso Henriques, the principal Ruler of Portugal, to Monk Bernardo of Claraval, organizer behind the Request for Cistercians, in satisfaction of a promise made after the Christian reconquest of Santarém, held by the Fields until 1147.
Santarém
Santarem has a fascinating historical centre with several Gothic monuments and calm, sloping avenues.
It's a lovely location for a leisurely stroll.
The Miracle of Santa Iria or Eirene, which occurred in Visigothic Renaissance times, inspired its current name.
The city is built on a plateau with seven hills with Tejo meanders surrounding it.
Fátima
Fatima is one of the most important religious pilgrimage sites in the world. Pilgrims travel to Fatima throughout the year, but the 13th of each month from May to October are the days that celebrate the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the three little shepherds at the Cova da Iria (a valley) in the parish of Fatima in 1917. On these days you may find yourself in a crowd of thousands of pilgrims, many of whom have walked for hours. A pilgrimage to this holy place is a very special experience.
Nazaré
The Canyon of Nazaré is an underwater canyon on the coast of Nazaré in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is at least 5,000 metres deep and 230 kilometres long.
This canyon generates huge waves that make Nazaré a Mecca on the world map for big wave surfers.
Although Praia do Norte has captured the world's attention, Nazaré not only has huge and dangerous waves, but also places that are accessible to all surfers.
When to catch the biggest waves in Nazaré
The monster wave season starts in November and ends in February. Since 2011, the Big Wave Challenge at the iconic Praia do Norte has attracted the world's attention and made Nazaré a world-renowned surfing destination.
